
Kathmandu, March 23: Police have arrested three individuals on charges of involvement in illegal cryptocurrency transactions. A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku, carried out the arrests.
According to Superintendent of Police and information officer Manohar Prasad Bhatt, those arrested include one Indian national and two Nepali citizens. They are 41-year old Pravesh Ali from West Bengal, currently living in Ekantakuna, Lalitpur, 31-year-old Naresh Reule from Nepalgunj, now residing in Bauddha Jorpati, Kathmandu; and 30-year-old Deepti Pokharel from Ishwarpur, Sarlahi, currently living in Nakkhu, Lalitpur.
Bhatt said police acted on a tip about illegal hundi and cryptocurrency transactions. Reule was first arrested in Samakhusi in Kathmandu at around 2:30 PM on March 19. The other two were detained later the same day.
Pokharel was arrested at Samakhusi at around 4:30 PM with Rs 1.53 million in cash. Ali was arrested in Ekantakuna at 7 PM.
Preliminary investigation shows Ali used a Binance ID through his mobile phone to conduct transactions totaling 918,151.96 USD, equivalent to around Rs 1.36 billion.
The suspects have been sent to the Kathmandu District Police Office for further action.
