Case filed against 32 in tourists’ fake rescue scam

Kathmandu, March 23: A case has been filed against 32 individuals over a fake rescue scam targeting tourists going for mountaineering expeditions.

The Office of the Government Attorney, Kathmandu, filed the case at the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday.

According to court information officer Deepak Kumar Shrestha, the charges include offences against the state and organised crime.

Out of the 32 accused, eight have been arrested and presented before the court, while the others are absconding.

On January 24, the Central Investigation Bureau received information that a group was systematically defrauding foreign mountaineering tourists to claim insurance money. The आरोप states that tourists were falsely declared ill, evacuated by helicopter, admitted to hospitals, and insurance claims were then filed.

Police arrested several individuals in connection with the case, including Jayaram Rimal, operator of Mountain Rescue Service Pvt Ltd, manager Bibek Pandey, Rabindra Adhikari of Nepal Chartered Service, Mukti Pandey and Subash KC of Everest Experience and Associates.

Former vice president of the Airlines Operators Association of Nepal, Rajendra Bahadur Singh, and Sandeep Tiwari, operator of Royal Holidays Adventure and Travel Company, were also arrested.

Similarly, on February 6, police arrested Dr Girwan Raj Timilsina of Shridhi Hospital and others, and continued the investigation.
