Kathmandu, March 21: Nepali Congress lawmaker Arjun Narasingha KC will administer the oath of office to newly elected Members of Parliament in his capacity as the senior-most member of the House.
Eakram Giri, spokesperson for the Federal Parliament Secretariat, said KC, born in 1947, is currently the oldest among the elected lawmakers. Until a Speaker is chosen, KC will also chair the House proceedings.
The Secretariat will send a letter to the President’s Office to arrange KC’s own oath-taking. He is set to take the oath from President Ramchandra Paudel on March 25. After that, he will administer the oath to all lawmakers on March 26.
The Constitution, under Article 91(5), states that in the absence of both the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the eldest member present chairs the House. The law also requires newly elected lawmakers to take their oath before the presiding member.
The Secretariat said preparations are ongoing to hold the swearing-in ceremony at the multipurpose hall of the new Parliament building.
