Kathmandu, March 20: The Cabinet meeting held on March 14 had decided to recommend Home Minister Aryal for appointment as a member of the National Assembly. Aryal himself shared this information with journalists after the meeting.
Although the Cabinet’s recommendation reached the President’s Office on March 16, President Paudel has yet to make a decision.
A source close to the President said the decision has been put on hold for the time being. According to the source, the President will move ahead only after a new government is formed and its position is clear.
“The Cabinet’s recommendation to appoint the Home Minister of an interim government to the National Assembly has been held for now,” the source said. “Since a single-party majority government is likely, the President has informally indicated to his secretariat and close aides that he will decide on the appointment only after consulting the new government.”
Prime Minister Sushila Karki had faced criticism for recommending Aryal while he was still serving as Home Minister. A writ petition has also been filed at the Supreme Court challenging the recommendation.
