With the conclusion of the parliamentary election, Nepali democracy now faces the litmus test of functioning.
The Karki-led interim government is to be congratulated for leading the effort to hold free and fair elections – and that free of violence.
The Rashtriya Swatantra Party received an overwhelming mandate to govern and it must now deliver. Time is of the essence.
It must prioritize good governance and zero tolerance for corruption.
The old established political parties have also important roles to play – that of a loyal and effective opposition.
It is regretful that the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party has been reduced to a mini-party. It must now bring its own house in order and must reorganize from the grassroots upward.
The Madhes-based political parties are also in a mess – one of their own making. Hopefully they will have learnt from their mistakes.
This time around they have been tested and found woefully lacking – including leadership qualities.
After the promulgation of the Constitution in 2015, good governance and service delivery were the dominant factors of politics, where Madhes parties failed to perform and deliver despite being in the government multiple times.
Madhesi parties did excel in democratic and identity politics, but failed in good governance and service delivery.
