Kathmandu, September 28: The national flag carrier, Nepal Airlines Corporation (Nepal Airlines), has launched direct flights to Guangzhou, China. The Corporation began regular Kathmandu–Guangzhou–Kathmandu flights from Saturday.
Although the Corporation had planned to start flights to Guangzhou from September 25, the inaugural flight took place only on Saturday afternoon due to some technical issues. The inaugural flight to Guangzhou was canceled even after dignitaries from various sectors and some passengers had already arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport. The Corporation managed arrangements for those passengers.
According to the Corporation’s spokesperson, Manoj Kumar Sah, the aircraft that departed for Guangzhou from Kathmandu on Saturday afternoon returned to Kathmandu on Sunday carrying 107 passengers from Guangzhou. Regular flights will be operated to Guangzhou as per the predetermined schedule.
According to the NAC plan, direct flights to Guangzhou will operate every Sunday, Tuesday, and Saturday. The Corporation has fixed the one-way fare from Kathmandu to Guangzhou at NPR 30,000 and a round-trip ticket at NPR 50,000.
Currently, China Southern Airlines operates regular flights on the Kathmandu–Guangzhou route, while Himalaya Airlines has also been serving this route from Nepal. Since a large number of Nepalis reside in Guangzhou, the destination is expected to be financially beneficial for the Corporation.
With the addition of Guangzhou flights, Nepal Airlines will now operate regular flights to 11 destinations in nine countries. At present, using its two narrow-body and two wide-body aircraft, the Corporation operates international flights to Doha (Qatar), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Dubai (UAE), Hong Kong, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore (India), Bangkok (Thailand), Dammam (Saudi Arabia), Narita (Japan), and now Guangzhou (China).
