Samprit Rai, a celebrated Guitarist and music composer, has been a prominent figure in Nepal’s contemporary music scene for more than 15 years. Known for his groundbreaking fusion style, Rai blends traditional Nepali instruments with modern guitar arrangements, creating music that is both rooted in heritage and globally appealing.Rai is the only artist to have received the National Music Honor and Award in the Guitarist category twice—in 2022 and 2025. Presented by the Music Association of Nepal in collaboration with national cultural institutions, the award is among the highest recognitions for musicians in the country. Both times, Rai stood as the sole recipient in the Guitarist category, underscoring the selectivity and national importance of this honor. He was recognized for cultural innovation, technical mastery, his use of music as a tool for mental well-being, and for his efforts to preserve and promote Nepali music internationally.In 2020, Rai served on the judging panel for the Sadhana Online Talent Hunt Singing Competition, Nepal’s first large-scale online singing contest. The event attracted approximately 100 participants from across the country. According to observers, the caliber of participants was very high, further highlighting the significance of Rai’s role as a judge in such prestigious competitions. In 2024, he was part of the expert judging panel for the Virtual Battle of the Bands, a competition organized by Sangeet Pathshala and Nepali Guitar Tutorial. The contest drew more than 70 bands across various genre. Rai, as part of the judging panel, helped evaluate performances and select the winners. The caliber of the participating bands was regarded as exceptionally high, making the competition one of the most respected in Nepal’s music landscape. Rai also holds a Lifetime Membership in the Music Association of Nepal (MAN) and is a member of the National Creator and Performer Academy (NCPA), both of which are prestigious and highly competitive memberships reserved for artists with national-level contributions, mentorship, and cultural leadership. Alongside his awards, Rai has served as a jury member for major national music competitions. Beyond performance and competitions, Rai has extended his artistry into the field of sound healing. Through live sessions that combine guitar with folk instruments, singing bowls, and therapeutic sounds, he has contributed to programs that support mental health, particularly among children, adolescents, senior citizens, and vulnerable groups. His initiatives focus on reducing stress, anxiety, and mental imbalance, and on fostering meditation, peace, and community well-being. Rai’s music has also reached the international development sector. Rai led a special fusion performance on International Volunteer Day organized by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV). The piece, blending Guitar with Tabala, Sarangi, and Vocals, was broadcast nationwide and celebrated for its innovative message of volunteerism and solidarity. From winning Nepal’s highest music awards to mentoring the next generation through competitions and integrating music into wellness initiatives, Samprit Rai has become a central figure in shaping Nepal’s evolving music culture and presenting it on the world stage.
