Investigation underway into burnt banknotes at Deuba and Khadka residences

Kathmandu, Sept 22:  An investigation has begun into burnt banknotes found at the residences of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and former Energy Minister Deepak Khadka.

According to sources, separate probes have been launched by the Department of Money Laundering Investigation and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police. A team led by an SP visited both residences and started preliminary inquiries.

At Deuba’s residence, burnt notes of 1,000 and 500 rupee denominations, along with US dollars, were found. Police spokesperson DIG Binod Ghimire said the bureau is investigating unruly incidents, looting, and reports of burnt banknotes during the Gen Z protests.

Money scattered at Khadka’s house had reportedly been thrown into the air by protesters. Police arrested three people on the night of September 9 with some of the looted cash from Deuba’s residence.

Based on the detainees’ statements and the burnt notes found at the houses, the Department of Money Laundering Investigation will also carry out its own probe, an official confirmed.
