ICC-Nepal to help Bhatbhateni reconstruction

Kathmandu, September 22: The International Chamber of Commerce Nepal has offered to assist in the reconstruction of the Bhatbhateni Supermarket, which was damaged by vandalism and arson during the Gen Z movement.

In a meeting held at the damaged site of Bhatbhateni in Baluwatar on Sunday, International Chamber of Commerce Nepal (ICC Nepal) President Rajesh Kaji Shrestha assured Bhatbhateni President Meen Bahadur Gurung that he would take initiative with businessmen to provide construction materials, including sawdust, cement, tiles, dyes and paints, produced in Nepal at factory price.

Shrestha said that the time has come for industry and business to cooperate and show generosity through their products in such a disaster. “Since it is our tradition to help in times of distress, all businessmen should join hands,” he said.

He also urged the banks and insurance companies to expedite the settlement of insurance and necessary financial procedures for the reconstruction of Bhatbhateni.

The meeting was attended by the office bearers and working committee members of the International Chamber of Commerce Nepal.

The Bhatbhateni supermarket was targetted to vandalism, looting and arson during the Gen Z movement on last September 8 and 9. According to preliminary estimates, 12 out of 28 branches across the country have suffered losses worth about 50 billion rupees due to vandalism, loot and arson.

Despite such a huge loss, Chairman Min Bahadur Gurung has said that there has been no setback in his dreams and resolutions. He recalled that Bhatbhateni has been continuously contributing to the welfare of consumers, society and the country since 1984.

Bhatbhateni has been paying an annual revenue of more than 18 billion rupees and has created more than 10,000 jobs. Earlier, the supermarket had gifted a building worth Rs 9.5 crore to the Teaching Hospital, Rs 41 crore assistance was given for the under-construction of a children’s hospital under the leadership of Dr Bhagwan Koirala, and Rs 11 crore to the flood and landslide victims.

In the taxpayer honor, Bhatbhateni has been awarded the status of the country’s highest taxpayer for three times.

As the largest and leading supermarket network in Nepal, Bhatbhateni, has continued to build consumer confidence by expanding its branches not only in the capital Kathmandu but also in major cities.
