Kathmandu, September 17: Banana traders have now made a public appeal not to import the bananas from abroad as local bananas are enough to meet demands during the Dasain, Tihar and Chhath festivals.
Bishnuhari Pant, central president of Nepal Banana Producers Federation, Kathmandu, said that banana production in Nepal is currently encouraging and all fruit and vegetable wholesalers associations across the country have been requested not to import them during festivals as Nepali products are enough.
He said that the Mahasangha had already addressed a letter to the Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Traders Association across Nepal not to import bananas. In the letter of request made by the Mahasangha, it has been mentioned that at present, banana is being grown enthusiastically in Nepal and in the current situation, the demand of Nepali banana market is being reduced to Dasain, Tihar and Chhath by Nepal’s production.
In this way, due to the import of bananas, there is a direct impact on the Nepali economy, foreign trade deficit, employment, as well as an increased risk that Nepali commercial banana-producing farmers may be displaced, and the farmers of all districts may go on an agitation.
