No live telecast of parliamentary proceedings after govt shuts down social media platforms

Kathmandu, Sept 5: Parliament’s live broadcast will be halted after the government decided to block unregistered social media platforms.

According to the Speaker’s Secretariat, following the government’s move to shut down unregistered platforms, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire raised concerns over the security of Parliament’s live streaming and video archives.

“Instructions have already been given to the Parliament Secretariat to arrange alternative means for broadcast management and information flow,” said the Speaker’s press advisor Shekhar Adhikari.

Both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly sessions have been streamed live. On Thursday, the government announced it would block all social media platforms not registered in Nepal.

The next House of Representatives session is scheduled for September 10, and the National Assembly session for September 8. Videos of lawmakers’ speeches are also uploaded on YouTube.
