Kathmandu, September 5: Nepal Telecom has shut down unregistered social networks following the government’s instructions. Implementing the order of the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, Telecom on Thursday shut down social networks including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram for not completing the registration process.
On Thursday, the government instructed the Nepal Telecom Authority to immediately shut down unregistered social networks. Accordingly, the authority had given necessary instructions to the internet service providers. Earlier, Ncell has also issued a notice that unregistered social networks have been closed.
The government had set a deadline of one week on September 12 for the listing of social networks. As soon as this period ends on Wednesday, the process of banning platforms will start.
Meanwhile, political leaders have opposed the government’s decision to shut down social platforms, stating that this is a move against freedom of expression.
The government, on the other hand, has clarified that it will resume social networks immediately after it registers with the government authority.
