Umbrella movement for restoration of Monarchy

By P.R. Pradhan

The Joint Movement for the Restoration of the Hindu Kingdom, coordinated by senior politician and former minister Navaraj Subedi, has scheduled the launch of a decisive movement for the restoration of the Hindu Kingdom and the abolishment of the federal structure from Thursday, May 29.

Around 50 pro-monarchy and also pro-Hindu religious organizations are jointly launching the movement from Ratnapark, Kathmandu on Thursday.

All the participants in the “peaceful” movement have been asked to attend the movement with an umbrella to avoid sunlight, temperature and also possible rains. Thus, it is also known as the umbrella movement.

As people from the Kathmandu Valley and also from different parts of the country are expected to take part in the movement, thus, a massive crowd of people is believed to be participating.

The security organs have become alert to the possible violence, although, the organizing groups are saying that the movement will be peaceful.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, also the chair of the UML, has asked the UML cadres to capture Kathmandu on May 29 to fail the agitation of pro-monarchy groups.

Oli’s statement has been widely criticized by opposition parties and also the Human Rights Commission. Even the ruling Nepali Congress leaders have also denounced Oli’s statement to capture the Kathmandu Valley.

The agitating groups have scheduled to launch the movement on the day when the government is officially observing Republic Day. However, the agitating groups have said that the movement is going to be launched on May 29 and it will continue until the abolishment of the present political system.

It is expected that a large number of youths would take part in the agitation launched against rampant corruption, perversions, bad governance and irregularities.

Possibility of violence and suppression:

The movement organizing committee has suspected possible suppression of the movement. A 2000-member volunteer team has been introduced to organize the movement peacefully and to check the infiltration of people from outside to create violence.

On March 28 the pro-monarchy groups were gathered at Tinkune for a peaceful assembly. The police fired teargas at the stage in result, two individuals including one journalist, were killed and several houses and government vehicles were set ablaze. The security personnel used massive force to turn the peaceful assembly into violence. Above five dozen pro-monarchy people, including MP Dhawal Shumsher, RPP’s senior vice chairman Rabindra Mishra, chairman of the Save Motherland, Durga Prasain, among others, were arrested and fake cases have been filed against them. Despite the demand to constitute an independent judiciary committee to investigate the Tinkune incident, the government denied its formation.

This time, the organizing committee has asked the Human Rights Commission and also other international human rights groups to monitor the situation and activities closely.
