Three years after its formation by splitting from the CPN-UML, the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist) held its general convention in Kathmandu.
The five-day general convention inaugurated by party chairman Nepal is concluding on Thursday.
The inauguration of the general convention held at Nepal Academy in Kamaladi was attended by the chairpersons of all political parties except CPN-UML chairman KP Sharma Oli. Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba, Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal chairman Upendra Yadav, Rastriya Swatntra Party chair Rabi Lamichhane others addressed the inaugural session of the convention.
A total of 1,849 delegates from across the country are taking part in the convention. The party which is struggling to retain its members showed its strength in Kathmandu by organising a rally during the inauguration of its convention. However, CPN-UML chairman KP Oli continued to undermine the party. He did not appear in the inaugural session despite receiving an invitation.
In the closed session, the CPN (Unified Socialist) leaders discussed the political report, socialism programme, statute amendment proposal and the organizational report.
The convention will conclude on Thursday by electing 299-member central committee including 21 central office bearers. It is likely that the party will elect its office bearers in consensus although Ghanashyam Bhusal made prepartions to contest for the post of the party chairman.
