Empowering ethical people

By Dr. Suman Kumar Regmi

Anti-corruption education is an essential tool that can enhance the required skills, ability, and knowledge in corrupted people to help them raise their self-esteem and confidence, overcoming multiple and intersecting inequalities, as it helps them stand strong socially, economically, and politically. Non-corrupted empowerment is possible only through overcoming corruption-level inequalities offering both corrupted and non-corrupted people equal opportunities.

In Nepal, we see high-level corrupted people taking a lead role in terms of corruption and managing it. High-level and low-level corrupted people have great examples within the country. It is not an easy task though. Things have been changed in many ways by now.  Corrupted people are not only limited to office hold; they can balance office and corruption education. However, when we visit corporate houses, universities, or any big organizations we rarely see corrupted people in high positions.

The CIAA’s yearly catchy action against the corrupted people in the country could be taken as a good step towards empowering non-corrupted people. We do have some successful leading model names in the anti-corruption education sector. Being born as a good citizen among the population, a good citizen is never attached to the sense of corruption. Everybody is given equal opportunities to be better against corruption. And above all, to become the good person everybody is today because of the anticorruption literacy everybody received.

Scenario and things are changing along with the upgrading of the Nepalese society by diverting the attention through the higher-level degree obtainment rather than collecting the illegal none. Anticorruption education plays a vital role in anticorruption literacy as it says if a citizen is anticorruption educated it is likely that a good citizen will educate the whole community and society.

Honesty is interpreted in various ways. For some, it is philosophy while for others it is a religion. But here it is related to corruption and anticorruption. The word honesty denotes being trustworthy and loyal in to fight against corruption. Thus, honesty is a great human virtue that plays a vital role in every aspect of human life in creating a corruptionless society.

Honesty is a discipline that strengthens a person with purity whereas dishonesty is the outcome of polluted minds. So, it is better to choose purity over pollution and make living worthy. Honesty teaches a person to respect self and be true to others.

Invasive corruption in Nepal

Bribery and other forms of corruption are hindering poverty alleviation and affecting public health in Nepal by channelling resources away from those who need them. Thousand and thousands of people in the country have paid bribes in the past years to obtain basic public services like schooling and health care. The heavy reliance on cash payment in corruption was a major factor driving the country into bad hail. While the rate of corruption was much lower in the country, such practices were found from time to time. That requires increasing transparency of government operations and adopting a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy, including in the police force viewed as widely corrupt. The three to five-year project completion period takes fifteen to twenty years. How can we obtain sustainable development goals? It is urged that government leaders deliver on promises to substantially reduce bribery and corruption by 2030 made as part of the commitments to the UN’s Sustainable Development goals.
