Intrepid Travel Nepal embraces Earth Day with “Planet vs Plastics” campaign

In an exclusive interview with Ashish Verma, Country General Manager of Intrepid Nepal, we had the opportunity to delve into the Earth Day Special from Intrepid DMC Nepal.

Today, on Earth Day 2024, we are thrilled to unveil a remarkable tale of environmental stewardship emerging from Nepal’s awe-inspiring trekking trails. Since March of last year, Intrepid’s Nepal trek leaders have implemented a groundbreaking addition to their trips–the introduction of a dedicated ‘Purpose Day.’

“This pioneering initiative encourages both leaders and passengers to actively participate in the restoration of the pristine trekking routes on one day of their trek by collecting rubbish,” shares Asish Verma.

Prior to embarking on the trek, participants receive comprehensive briefings, fostering eagerness to contribute to a cleaner, greener environment. Verma comments, “Our customers’ voluntary engagement underscores a genuine commitment to effecting positive change, aligning perfectly with the ethos of both Intrepid and Earth Day, especially given this year’s theme of ‘Planet vs Plastics’”.

In fact, our initiatives transcend conventional cleanup efforts. Through a strategic partnership with Sagarmatha Next, passengers willingly undertake the noble task of transporting pre-packaged ‘carry me bags’ filled with waste from Namche to Lukla in the Everest region. Trekking a distance of over 16 kilometres, they ensure the proper disposal of these bags, epitomizing responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.

The tangible impact of these collective endeavors is significant. Last year, our combined actions led to the collection of over 1200 kilograms of dry waste, meticulously documented and managed by our dedicated trek leaders. This waste has been responsibly disposed of or handed over to relevant authorities, leaving the trails cleaner and more pristine than ever before.

As we commemorate Earth Day today, we not only celebrate the splendor of our planet but also reaffirm our unwavering dedication to its preservation. “Through initiatives like ‘Purpose Day’ not just on Earth Day but every day, we demonstrate that every individual possesses the power to enact meaningful change. Looking ahead, we remain steadfast in our commitment to sustainability, ensuring that these breathtaking landscapes endure for generations to come,” states Verma.
