Kathmandu, April 19: Deergha Sodari, leader of the Ekakrit Samajwadi Party (ESP), has been appointed the chief minister of the Soodur Paschim Province.
Earlier, UML, a major partner in the central coalition government, had refused Sodari’s candidature, however, when Madhav Nepal took a stance and demonstrated suspicious behavior by holding a secret meeting with opposition leader NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba at Narayan Khadka’s residence in Dhapashi, UML supported the ESP candidate, although, it has decided not to join the government immediately.
UML has suspected that Madhav Nepal intends to break the coalition and may join hands with the opposition coalition led by Deuba.
Madhav Nepal named Sodari to irritate the UML, as UML had taken action against Sodari due to his ugly behavior against a female worker and also being involved in financial manipulation before the split in the UML.
Sodari took the oath of office on Thursday evening, however, he is yet to form a government.
Earlier, the central coalition had decided to support the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) in the Soodur Paschim, when Nepal expressed dissatisfaction and decided to support another NUP candidate belonging to the Resham Chaudhary camp, supported by NC, both Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal and UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli became suspicious from Nepal.
Meanwhile, Deuba has been able to create a serious rift in the NUP as the husband and patron of NUP, Resham sided with the NC, whereas, the president and wife of Resham, Ranjita, sided with the alliance government in the centre.
Due to the rift between husband and wife, NUP had given two candidates for the post of chief minister. Finally, ESP’s Sodari, having the strength of four members in the Province Council, has become chief minister.
