In a revealing comment on the recent electoral defeat of Nepali Congress president Krishna Prasad Bhattarai at the hands of UML’s Vidya Bhandari, The Times of India–one of Delhi’s well-known means of informally signalling its mood – has flatly concluded that the outcome “is no surprise.” In its mini-editorial (in the Current Topics column of 11 February), the Indian newspaper of the establishment also stated that Bhandari “has received a sympathy vote and has also been the beneficiary of the size-able communist’s support base that has traditionally existed in the Kathmandu valley.
