The case of the loan shark victims has not been solved although the government formed a commission to resolve the case and the commission has already submitted its report.
Several victims of loan sharks, who arrived in Kathmandu walking for 23 days on February 22, are continuing their protests.
However, the government did not address their demands, and currently there is no minister in the line ministry to hold talks with the victims of loan sharks because of the abrupt change in coalition partners. Even when the government has not received a full shape, the loan shark victims are adamant that they will not leave the capital until they get justice. They are protesting daily in Kathmandu.
The government has tried to negotiate by forming a negotiation team to address their demands. But the talks have already failed twice. The agitating loan shark victims have demanded the cancellation of the arbitrary mortgage forced by the moneylenders. Many claim that despite making annual payments, their debts continue to swell, with interest doubling or even tripling every four years. They have accused the moneylenders of robbing their homes and land. They said that they had come to Kathmandu for justice because the moneylenders had usurped even one kattha of their land illegally.
The victims complain that even when they return double the amount of the loan, the moneylender is not ready to release the land and demands more money than what was borrowed. The loan shark victims even blamed the state for politicising their case instead of addressing the demands of the victims. Fed up with the dilly dally by the government many victims have lost hopes of getting justice, prompting a youth of Bara to commit suicide recently.
Shatrudhan Kushwaha Yadav, spokesperson of Kishan Majdur Sangharsha Samiti against loan sharking and fraud, said that the government is reluctant to address the demands of loan shark victims. He stated that if the government addresses the 6-point demand, the victims will return home immediately.
