The VC selection drama ends

By Our Reporter

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has again lied to the public as well as academicians by appointing his confidant to the post of the Vice Chancellor of the Tribhuvan University against his claim that an independent and capable man would be appointed to the post.

In the capacity of chancellor of TU, PM Dahal appointed Professor Keshar Jung Baral as its vice chancellor on Tuesday last week.

Although an open call was made for the position claiming that the vice-chancellor would be appointed fairly, Baral, close to the CPN (Maoist Centre), made it to the top position of the oldest and largest university in Nepal.

Among 43 applicants, 14 candidates were short-listed and a three-member search committee headed by Minister for Education Ashok Kumar Rai had recommended Chitra Bahadur Budhathoki, Baral and Tankanath Dhamala for the position.

Baral got the position though he was recommended in the second place, after Budhathoki. He is among the few academics to become the vice-chancellor twice.

In 2007, Baral was appointed the vice-chancellor of Pokhara University for four years in the Maoist quota. As he was the favorite candidate of PM Dahal, he got the position, but the decision drew criticism not only from the professors but also from lawmakers.

The selection process lasting for weeks resulted in a mere drama staged by PM Dahal.
