The much-awaited Mahasamiti meeting of the Nepali Congress concluded by endorsing all five reports unanimously. However, the meeting decided that the endorsed proposals would be refined and finalised by a Central Committee meeting. The proposals were shaped by incorporating suggestions received from the group discussions of the participating Mahasamiti members.
NC Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka’s policy proposal, General Secretary Gagan Thapa’s organisational proposal, and General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma’s contemporary political proposal were passed with amendments. Additionally, the meeting accepted the audit report from Audit Committee Coordinator Shyam Ghimire and the financial report from Finance Minister and party spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat.
However, the reports could be altered in the central committee meeting as party president Sher Bahadur Deuba enjoys a comfortable majority in the central committee. Deuba is unhappy with General Secretary Thapa’s proposal not to forge pre-electoral alliance in the future so that NC supporters do not have to cast voters in another symbol rather than the tree. However, when Thapa denied withdrawing the policy, Deuba was compelled to endorse it.
Likewise, encouraged by the successful holding of Mahasamiti meeting, Deuba is also planning to form the parliamentary party committee of the party. After he was elected the parliamentary party leader by defeating Gagan Thapa, party president Deuba did not constitute the parliamentary committee. As Deuba has a clear majority in the parliamentary party, he is sure to make the committee in his favour either by elections or nominations.
One of the biggest achievements of the Mahasamiti meeting is that it could send a message of unity among party workers. It was what the leaders said at the end of the Mahasmititi meeting.
In his closing remarks, Party President Deuba expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions to making the Mahasamiti meeting a success. He urged all party representatives and cadres to unite and work towards furthering the success of the party.
General Secretary Thapa announced that the meeting reached a decision to sustain the five-party alliance. “We are fully committed to initiating a system of good governance and national morality within the current government, aiming to combat corruption, anomalies and distortions through legal means.
