Nepal to get 3,000 additional martyrs

By Our Reporter

Martyrs are those who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the nation and usher in democracy or freedom for the people.

The true martyrs were those who lost their lives to end the 104-year-old Rana regime. However, Nepali politicians tend to add the number of martyrs, mostly those affiliated with their parties every time they reach power.

Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal is no different. Recently, he revealed that the government has finalised the decision to declare more than 3,000 individuals as martyrs. Although no new martyrs were declared on Martyrs Day on Tuesday, the government is sure to add the Maoist cadres who died or were killed while destroying public property and killing innocent people during the insurgency period.

Even those who had raped the women and were killed in retaliation will be on the list of martyrs. These new martyrs will only devalue the word ‘martyrs’.

Speaking at an event organised by the Martyrs Academy Nepal recently, PM Dahal confirmed that those who lost their lives during the Maoist insurgency, totalling over 3,000 people, have been officially designated as martyrs by the government.

The comprehensive list is set to be published in the Nepal Gazette.
