Kathmandu, January 26: Izumi Nakamitsu, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and High Representative of the United Nations on Disarmament Affairs, met with Speaker Devraj Ghimire.
In the meeting held on Thursday, January 25, both sides discussed issues related to efforts made by the United Nations and Nepal in disarmament, action plans related to small and light weapons, and ratification of international treaties, according to the Speaker’s Secretariat.
Speaker Ghimire appreciated the efforts made by the United Nations, the Committee on Disarmament and International Security in the General Assembly, and the global disarmament efforts made by the United Nations Office on Disarmament Affairs.
He said, “I believe that the discussions held at the Asia-Pacific Regional Preparatory Meeting will contribute greatly to the success of the Fourth Review Conference on Action Plans on Small Arms and Light Weapons.” Nepal is ready to contribute constructively to this process.
The Speaker said that since Nepal became a member of the United Nations on December 14, 1955, it has given high importance to its partnership with the United Nations. The speaker said that the recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Nepal confirmed that both the UN and Nepal attach great importance.
