Kathmandu, January 25: At a time when India has overshadowed the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) by reviving BIMSTEC, the SAARC member countries are making efforts for the resumption of SAARC.
During the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, Uganda, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NAM Summit.
Both leaders stressed the resumption of SAARC.
Again, Sri Lankan Ambassador to Nepal, Air Chief Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, held a meeting with Pakistani Ambassador Abrar H Hashmi on Tuesday, January 23. Both the ambassadors focused on the resumption of SAARC.
Pakistani Ambassador Hashmi wrote on his “X” account, “Pleased to receive today Air Chief Marshal SK Pathirana (Retd), Ambassador of Sri Lanka, a graduate of PAF Academy Rislapur. We resolved to further excellent bilateral relations, coordinate 3-way relations, and that in the SAARC.”
Pakistan was scheduled to host the 19th summit of SAARC in Islamabad on 15 to 16 November 2016. Following the 2016 Uri terror attack, India cancelled its participation in the 19th SAARC summit, alleging Pakistan’s involvement in the terror attack. Since then, the SAARC activities have been derailed.
