Kathmandu, January 25: The elections for the 19 seats going to be vacant in March in the National Assembly are going is be held by 9 am to 3 pm today.
The vote counting is expected to be completed within four hours of the elections, and by this evening, the Election Commission is expected to announce the result.
Out of the 20 seats going to be vacant in March, 19 members should be elected by the members of the seven provincial councils and the chiefs and deputy chiefs of the municipalities. One seat is going to be nominated by the President at the recommendation of the government.
The main attraction of the elections has become Koshi Province, from where Krishna Shitaula is contesting the election. UML and RPP have developed an alliance to defeat the common candidate of the alliance government, Sitaula. Sitaula is the defeated candidate in the election of the House of Representatives from a constituency in Jhapa.
Sitaula is the choice of NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal. Dahal has assured to support Sitaula for the post of National Assembly chairman if he is elected an NA member.
RPP and UML voters alone are not enough to defeat Sitaula, however, if some voters will cross the floor, in that case, Sitaula can be defeated.
Sitaula and Dahal have family relations through their wives.
