Congress leadership rivalry sharpens

The intensity of the hitherto largely below-the-surface rivalry for leadership between Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and party president Krishna Prasad Bhattarai has increased rather than diminished over the past week.

The visible end result of it all has been that the ruling party has become increasingly polarized. Indeed, according to many commentators, it is now looking bewildered, forlorn, and lost.

The Koirala-controlled official media continue to highlight the inappropriateness of Bhattarai’s candidature for the by-election due in February, mind you, despite the “unanimous” decision of the party Center Working Committee endorsing!
