Kathmandu, January 15: Maghe Sankranti is being observed today by different communities in different ways.
The day is related to the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with various cultural and traditional activities, such as bonfires, and feasting. It is also a time for giving thanks for a successful harvest and praying for prosperity in the coming year.
In Nepal, different communities observe this festival by eating boiled yam, ghee, chaku made from sugarcane, meat and other delicious items including khichadi rice.
The Tharu community observes the day as its new year.
Maghe Sankranti, also known as Makkar Sankranti, is a big festival of the Hindu and Buddhist communities in Nepal. Also, this festival is observed in India by the Hindu community.
People visit different holly rivers and take bath on the occasion.
