
Kathmandu, 12 January: The 302nd Prithivi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Great King Prithivi Narayan Shah, is being observed today as the National Unity Day.
Great King Prithivi Narayan Shah is the founder and unifier of modern Nepal.
The Nepal Army has recognized the Great King as its founder.
Different organizations are organizing interaction programmes. Moreover, different groups, including the Rastriya Prajatantra Party led by Rajendra Lingden and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal led by Kamal Thapa are hosting tea receptions.
People from different walks of life in Kathmandu visit the statue of the Great King located in front of the Singh Durwar main gate and pay tribute to the Great King.
After the 2006 April uprising, the government stopped marking the Prithivi Jayanti and also observing National Unity Day. The government had cut off the national holiday as well.
Nevertheless, due to mounting public pressure, the government has been compelled to observe National Unity Day and also announce a national holiday.
