Kathmandu, 1 January: The Nepali Congress is observing National Reconciliation Day today recalling the day when its founding leader B.P. Koirala returned to Nepal from self-exile in India, 16 Pous.
The late B.P. Koirala returned to Nepal in 2033 BS after a long self-exile in India saying that the nation’s sovereignty and independence were under threat, therefore, to save the nation, the NC and the monarchy should join hands.
Koirala, who was in self-exile in India, closely observed the annexation of the independent and sovereign Himalayan kingdom of Sikkim through a conspiracy; he felt a threat to Nepali sovereignty, therefore, he decided to return to Nepal.
Today is the 48th anniversary of the late Koirala returning from India.
Nevertheless, the NC today doesn’t follow the late Koirala’s ideology. Koirala was against collaboration with the communist parties, however, was of the view that the monarchy was important for saving Nepal’s sovereignty.
The Nepali Congress is observing the Day by organizing an assembly at the Nepal Academy today. All the senior leaders from the political parties have been invited to the program excluding the Swatatra Party led by Rabi Lamichhane and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party led by Rajendra Lingden.
