All is not well

EDITORIAL

Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal has completed one year in office. Dahal himself is not satisfied with the work performed by the government. Of late, Dahal is saying that he wants to work differently during his second year in office. Dahal publicly expressed the desire to reshuffle his cabinet by dismissing those ministers who have not been able to perform their responsibilities perfectly. However, it seems like a difficult task for him to change the ministers, as different political parties represent the government. Immediately after Dahal became the prime minister, he had expressed the commitment that he would speak less and work much as per the aspiration of the general public, nevertheless, Dahal spent his one year in office just flying on helicopters, inaugurating small projects and giving worthless speeches.

The government led by Dahal became famous for giving pardons to the culprits jailed on the murder charge and also the culprits under the consideration of the court. This is a severe violation of the rule of law. Dahal’s one year in office can also be evaluated as an era of rampant corruption, planned corruption, boosting gold smuggling, practising nepotism, favouritism, and sycophancy. Dahal assumed office on the eve of the New Year 2023 and by evaluating the performance of Dahal in the entire year, the nation lost precious time doing nothing.

The economy is the backbone of the political system, however, it is not in good shape. The country faced an economic recession. Of course, there could be some impact from the global recession and wars taking place in different parts of the globe, moreover, the Nepali recession is the result of domestic economic activities. The prime reason is that the government’s non-productive sector expenditure has increased due to the adoption of the federal structure, however, the domestic revenue could not be increased. When the government failed to meet the target, could not clear the impending bills including the payment of the construction companies. When the construction companies didn’t receive their payments, they were unable to clear the dues of different construction materials suppliers and manufacturers. This directly affected the local manufacturing industries, due to which, the industries cut down production and cut down on the labour force as well. This recession circle affected the entire economy. The government is managing funds through domestic and foreign debts, however, this is not the proper solution as the country’s debt burden is increasing alarmingly. Unless the government reduces the non-productive sector expenditure and encourages domestic production, we cannot see the good health of the economy. The economy based on the customs revenue in imported goods makes us a consumer country totally dependent. The government is encouraging foreign employment for the youths, which is a wrong policy. After all, a major overhaul is needed in all sectors, including dismantling of this non-functional political system. Finally, we say goodbye to the Year 2023 and welcome the Year 2024 with a hope for the betterment of the nation. Happy New Year!
