Youth help earthquake victims

The prime ministers and other ministers as well as bureaucrats seem only content by going abroad and getting fat allowances for their jaunts which actually does not help the country at all. They are only interested in making money or visiting foreign lands at the cost of the taxpayers’ money.

But thousands of people are suffering in the harsh conditions of the biting cold of Nepal’s winter days, in the recent quake-hit areas of Jajarkot and West Rukum.

What the people in these areas need is fast relief. That is why this reporter went to make contact with a youth, who was mentioned in the Peoples’ Review article about a fortnight ago as how she had taken the initiative to personally help the quake victims. It is encouraging that many other youths have also contributed to helping the suffering people.

The youth with whom this reporter came in contact is Kalyani Thapa, who in a proactive way raised funds and also food and clothing to distribute to the people in one of the worst-hit areas of Jajarkot. She personally went to this place and oversaw the distribution of the food and clothing and she told this reporter she was very happy to have contributed at least something for other Nepali people who were in trouble.

The government has made tall promises, but as mentioned above, what the people need now is immediate relief. But the government has not been able to deliver any such help. It has said it would make shelters and provide food, but the victims have yet to receive any type of comfort. They have to sleep in poorly equipped tents or even open skies and they don’t have warm clothing or much food even though they survived the devastating earthquake.

While thousands of even skilled youths are leaving Nepal every day, Kalyani Thapa who works for a local NGO, made use of her contacts and raised food and warm clothing for the victims. That is why we need our youths to stay back home and work for the country and not allow the corrupt politicians to take hold of the future of this impoverished nation which also faces natural disasters like quakes, floods and landslides.

Young children express thanks for the relief packages.
