Kathmandu, 19 December: The sugarcane farmers in Sarlahai have continued their street agitation, demanding a hike in the price of sugarcane. The farmers have demanded the sugarcane price should be fixed at Rs. 750 per quintal this year.
Last year the price of sugarcane was fixed at Rs. 610 per quintal. Additionally, the government assured to provide Rs. 70 per quintal as a subsidy.
As the farmers were unable to get the subsidy amount from the government even after one year, the farmers in Sarlahi launched an agitation.
Of late, Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal has instructed the concerned sectors to provide the subsidy immediately, yet, the farmers have continued their agitation, demanding that the minimum price of sugarcane be set for this year with an increase.
The government has not set the minimum price of sugarcane even after mid-December. It is already too late for the government to fix the price. Farmers have not started cutting down on sugarcane due to the delay by the government.
The sugarcane farmers are being exploited by the sugar mill owners and the government as well. Many farmers have quit farming sugarcane and chosen alternative farming.
