Kathmandu, 17 December: 1 Pous 2017 (15 December 1960) is the day when King Mahendra banned the political parties and introduced partyless Panchayat democracy, assuming executive power with him.
The Panchayat system existed in the country until 1990.
Those who believe in multiparty democracy recall 1 Pous as the black day, however, those patriotic people in the country believe that 1 Pous was the day that brought a landmark transformation of the nation.
The King Mahendra Memorial Committee believes that King Mahendra’s move on 1 Pous was to liberate Nepal from foreign intervention. Besides, during King Mahendra’s active leadership for almost a decade, he made a remarkable contribution in the area of the nation’s development.
The 1 Pous move by King Mahendra was against the Indian intervention in Nepal, the committee believes.
When the Nepali Congress-led government accepted the Indian interference, King Mahendra was compelled to initiate the move on 1 Pous, the Committee has explained.
During King Mahendra’s active leadership in the country, the Mahendra Highway was constructed. Besides, Kodari Highway and Siddhartha Highway, among others, were constructed. Dozens of industries were established, land reform was undertaken, and many revolutionary moves were made during King Mahendra’s era. Moreover, King Mahendra made a revolutionary contribution to ending caste discrimination. In foreign policy, Nepal adopted a non-aligned foreign policy, introducing the country into the international arena. Nepal established strong relations with China.

This is the reason the majority of the population has opposed the present political system, and they are lauding the return of the institution of monarchy.
