No matter how big talks Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat have been making about the revival of the national economy, the government has failed to collect revenue even to meet the recurrent expenditure in the first five months of the current fiscal year.
According to the latest report, the government collected revenue of Rs. 342, 541,200,000 as of December 12 while the recurrent expenditure reached Rs. 352,859,800,000. This means the revenue collected was less than Rs. 10 billion during these five months.
Now the government needs to take loans even to meet the recurrent expenditure, not to talk about capital expenditure which reached only Rs. 34.35 billion.
The government has a target to collect a revenue of Rs. 1,422,541,700,000 this fiscal year while it collected only Rs. 342, 541,200,000, which is only 24 per cent of the total target. Now in the remaining seven months, the government should collect 76 per cent of the revenue.
While the revenue collection is poor, the government has not taken measures to reduce the recurrent expenditure. Ministers and civil servants have been making international trips while the offices within the country are blowing money by orgnising unnecessary events. The federal structures in which the provincial government and the Assembly members have to be paid unnecessarily are ballooning the government expenditure.
