Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that his participation in the World Climate Action Summit (COP28) of the United Nations Frame Convention on Climate Change held in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 29 to December 3 was highly fruitful.
Talking to journalists upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport from the COP28 on Sunday evening, he briefed the list of the achievements.
Obviously, when UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his address to the COP 28 mentioned Nepal as a country which has been hit hard by the effect of climate change, this encouraged the Prime Minister and the Nepali delegation. Secretary-General, during his visit to Nepal in October, had observed the condition of Himalayas and had said that he saw the impact of climate changes on the Himalayas.
Besides, the PM also addressed a side line meeting of the Least Developed Countries in the capacity of the chair of the group.
“I have also called on the world community to adhere to the commitment to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees,” he said He also emphasised that there should be no delay in financial investment and the mobilisation of technology to address the problems faced by the Least Developed Countries that are at risk of climate change.
Dahal informed the global community that Nepal submitted the second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in accordance with the commitment of the Paris Agreement and had prepared a national adaptation plan.
Likewise, presenting the National Statement of Nepal, PM Prachanda drew the attention of the international community to the fact that even though Nepal’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions is negligible, it is suffering the adverse effects of climate change unequally.
“It is unfair to Nepal, so it should have access to climate finance and climate justice,” he said.
During his stay in Dubai, the Prime Minister visited the Embassy of Nepal in Abu Dhabi and instructed the mission to take coordinated initiatives to attract investment from the UAE to Nepal.
The Prime Minister addressed the Nepal-Dubai Business Forum jointly organised by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Dubai Chambers in Dubai in coordination with the Nepali Embassy and called upon the UAE investors to invest in Nepal’s priority areas.
During the programme, PM Dahal met with Indian PM Narendra Modi and President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, who is also the president of G77 and China.
He also addressed the High-Level Roundtable on Call of the Mountains: Who Saves us from the Climate Crisis? and emphasised the need for taking immediate action to minimise the adverse effects of climate change on mountainous countries like Nepal.
“Addressing the High-Level Roundtable as the key note speaker, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed the view that the adverse effects of climate change should not be delayed since the adverse effects of climate change are visible everywhere,” PM Prachanda told journalists at the TIA.
