Nepal and its two neighbours

On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan

We can assume that Nepal’s two neighbours are meticulously observing the new developments in the Himalayan nation. As every negative or positive activity will have a direct impact on the two immediate neighbours, India and China, they are closely monitoring the situation in Nepal. Of late, we could see huge demonstrations against the present corrupt political system and in favour of the reinstatement of the Hindu Kingdom. Whether it was a huge demonstration called by Durga Prasain, an individual, or an overwhelming welcome to the deposed king Gyanendra in Birtamod, Jhapa, they have represented the Nepali sentiment on the whole.

The government used every possible effort to suppress the two events. The Western-funded media decided to black out the two mega-events. Durga Prasain was kept under house arrest and prohibited from attending demonstration programmes organized in different places. Reports state that some Western missions in Kathmandu held an emergency meeting and discussed ways to keep alive the present constitution imposed under their grand design.

We are all aware that the present political system is the product of the Westerners, which was imposed by them to contain China as well as India. Maybe India could feel comfortable for the time being with the government’s pro-Indian policies, but in the long run, if Nepal turns into a powerful grenade of Westerners-planted terrorism against India, it will be too late for a correction in her Nepal policy. Accordingly, it could be a serious and permanent threat to China. When the Russian Federation closed its eyes on Ukraine, Zelenskyy emerged as a strong pillar of the Westerns, it was already became late for Russia to act. Now, Russia is paying the cost and hundreds of thousands of Ukraine people have been killed following the false assurance of the West. After all, the Ukraine civilization is being destroyed.

In the past, Nepal had remained as the buffer zone of security for both its neighbours, India and China. The kings of Nepal maintained balanced relations with both the neighbours and the two giant nations felt secure from the role of Nepal. With the 12-point Indo-West designed agreement between the followers of the parliamentarian democracy and “extremist” declared Maoists involved in the “people’s war”, India felt that its grand design in Nepal became successful. However, India didn’t know that Nepal fell into the Western grand design of destabilizing her from all corners. India believes that she can dominate and keep Nepal under her grip by making the Nepali economy weak. India did so and supported the Western policies creating instability in Nepal. Nepal’s economy has been destroyed and all the organs ensuring stability in the country have been destroyed. Instability has become the main feature of the present political system. Frequent changes in the government, absence of a majority government, absence of continuation of the works started by the previous government, bad governance, and rampant corruption have become the main characteristics of the present system. Having an open border with India, and unstable politics at home, Nepal may turn into a dangerous country for India anytime in future. Already, Nepal has become a smuggling hub. Quintals of gold are being smuggled to India via Nepal. It has already made a negative impact on the formal channel of the Indian revenue sources. If quintals of gold can be smuggled and if fake Indian currencies can be trafficked to India via Nepal, international terrorist groups may also become active against India misusing Nepali soil. In such circumstances, political instability cannot be always beneficial for India. Moreover, the present political system could be an opportunity for some Western countries, nevertheless, this is not going to benefit both the neighbouring countries. Both the neighbours can feel secure if there will be political stability, good governance and the rule of law prevail in Nepal.

To ensure security for India, regulating the international border between Nepal and India, introducing a passport or identity card system for the people travelling to each other’s country and an immigration record-keeping system should be introduced immediately. Furthermore, both neighbours of Nepal should play a proactive role in introducing a political system that could bring stability to Nepal and that should be acceptable to the majority population of the country. The 1990 constitution had given space to all sectors including the institution of monarchy. We should not forget that the institution of monarchy played a vital role in the peace and development of Nepal. Accordingly, having an excessive majority of the Hindu population, the country should be declared a Hindu Kingdom, this is the aspiration of the majority Nepali population and the giant neighbours should play a constructive role in stability in Nepal for their benefit.
