The future of MCC and the Indo-Pacific Strategy

By Nirmal P. Acharya

The Indo-Pacific strategy is certainly profound and grand, but the essence of the idea is nothing more than to encircle China and then wait for an opportunity to besiege it.

It is strange that while the US is doing everything it can to advance its Indo-Pacific strategy, it is also doing everything it can to bring China, Russia, and Iran together. A glance at the map shows that as soon as China, Russia, and Iran unite, the Indo-Pacific strategy of containing China is doomed to bankruptcy. Moreover, China is the largest trading partner of most countries in the world, and the containment of China is almost the same as the containment of the world. What is the alternative to bankruptcy for such a far-fetched strategy?

Of course, we all know that hegemony does not listen to persuasion. If a hegemony wants to do something, it must do it, otherwise, it would not be called a hegemony. In order to implement the Indo-Pacific strategy, the US hurriedly packed the MCC under the Indo-Pacific Strategy into a gift bag and sent it to Nepal.

Nepal hesitated for a long time, but finally took the goodie bag with both hands. This is understandable. After all, it is not easy to refuse a “gift” from a hegemonic power.

However, we also need to be clear that the existence of a cooperative relationship between China, Russia and Iran will disrupt the Indo-Pacific strategy. My personal guess is that the Indo-Pacific strategy will fall apart before the MCC is completed. Then we may have to politely return the MCC gift the way it came.
