Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Wednesday left for Dubai leading a Nepali delegation to the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).
COP 28 is being held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12.
The Prime Minister, who attended and addressed half a dozen meetings and conferences held focusing on climate change in Nepal in the past two weeks, is scheduled to attend High-level Segment of the COP 28-World Climate Action Summit being held on December 1 and 2, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Prime Minister will deliver a national statement on December 2.
Prime Minister Dahal is also scheduled to attend the 52nd Union Day Celebration of the United Arab Emirates and Zayed Sustainability Prize Awards Ceremony hosted by the UAE.
On December 2, the Prime Minister is hosting a high-level side event entitled “Call of the Mountain: Who Saves us from the Climate Crisis?” to raise the voice of Nepal on climate change as well as promote the mountain agenda in the COP negotiation process.
In the margins of the High-Level Segment, the Prime Minister will have bilateral meetings with heads of state, heads of government and other high dignitaries attending the Conference.
PM Dahal will also attend the Nepal-Dubai Business Forum being organised by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries on Thursday.
The COP 28 is believed to be crucial in addressing climate change could not be as effective as was assumed after US President Joe Biden decided not to attend the conference. The US officials recently revealed that President Biden would not attend the Dubai meet.
However, Nepal, as argued by Prime Minister Dahal, will strongly raise its voice for support in mitigating the crisis invited by climate change in the Himalayas. After UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutters visited Nepal last month and highlighted the impact of climate change on the Himalayas, Nepal has been encouraged to raise powerful voices on the issues. The Prime Minister also made adequate preparations for that.
However, Nepal has not been able to receive adequate funds to address the challenges posed by climate change on its communities. And Nepal is likely to voice for the funds in COP 28.
However, as said above, the COP 28, held in the absence of powerful world leaders like Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin may not produce the desired results.
