Media reports have it that four Nepali nationals have been killed in the Ukraine-Russia war, and those were serving in the Russian Army.
Although Nepal’s law does not allow its citizens to join military services in any country except for India and the UK, many jobless Nepalis have been serving in the military services of many countries. These four have also joined the Russian force for jobs.
Of the four, three one each from Ilam, Dolakah and Syangja–were killed on November 15 whereas one from Gorkha died in July.
The deaths of Nepali nationals were revealed only when the Nepali Embassy in Masco wrote to the Consular Service of Nepal to help manage the bodies of the three. Yet,, the Embassy in Masco and even the Foreign Ministry have not made public the killings of Nepali nationals in the war. While Nepal has strongly opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Nepalis have joined the Russian Army. Recently, it was revealed that a former Maoist combatant Ramesh BK of Myagdi joined the Russian Army. According to a news story published in The Rising Nepal, BK himself revealed through his facebook page about his job in the Army with a photograph holding a gun and in Russian combat dress.
Surprisingly, the government led by the Maoist chair has done nothing to prevent Nepalis and even his former combatants from joining the foreign armies risking their lives in the wars.
