Minister for Finance Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat met with the United Kingdom’s Minister of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Anne-Marie Trevelyan at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in London on Tuesday.
Minister Mahat, who is in the UK to participate in the high-level investment conference organised by the Embassy of Nepal in London, requested the United Kingdom (UK) to invest in the sectors of green energy, renewable energy, information technology, education and tourism in Nepal. He highlighted the need for investment because of the strain put on Nepal’s resources by the COVID-19 pandemic, the increased priority Nepal had placed on social security and the lack of investable capital caused by an increase in internal and external debt.
He also shed light on the problems Nepal was facing due to climate change, despite playing no role in causing it.
Minister of State Trevelyan noted that the UK had always been a partner in Nepal’s development and expressed her country’s commitment to supporting Nepal in the future. She also said she was positive about increasing the UK’s investment in Nepal.
Ambassador of Nepal to the UK Gyan Chandra Acharya and Second Secretary at the Nepali embassy Ram Babu Nepal were also present on the occasion.
