Although Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal often reiterates that the present ruling coalition will last for five years, he seems suspicious of the continuity of the coalition because of the latest expressions of Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala.
Dr. Koirala, who leads the rival faction in the NC and enjoys public support, has been stating that the NC should lead the government.
Koirala has been accusing Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal of becoming an anarchist and demanding that the NC lead the government.
Addressing a district assembly of the Nepali Congress in Chitwan the other day, Dr. Koirala said that PM Dahal was encouraging commonality.
Dr. Koirala has been targeting PM Dahal when NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba is not happy with the way Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha’s works. Deuba is angry with DPM Shrestha for jailing NC leader and former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand. When Deuba is too greedy to become the PM when Dr. Koirala has been demanding the replacement of PM Dahal and when CPN-UML chair KP Oli is applying every measure to topple the Dahal-led government, the PM has lost his sleep. However, Deuba has not spoken against the government as a whole.
Meanwhile, the crisis in Koshi is likely to bring NC and UML together to avert a snap election because, unless UML and NC form a coalition, mid-term polls cannot be avoided. But no party wants snap polls in Koshi because of the communal division regarding the province’s name. And if NC and UML leave the coalition in Koshi to avoid mid-term elections, it will also affect the present coalition in Kathmandu.
