Chinese scholars’ team visiting Nepal in September

Kathmandu, 24 August: A delegation from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), a think tank based in Beijing, visiting Nepal in September this year at the invitation of the China Study Center, Nepal.

The delegation, led by Dr. Hu Shisheng, Director, Institute of South Asian Studies, CICIR, is comprised of Dr. Jia Chunyang, scholar/researcher; Dr. Zhang Shujian, scholar/researcher; and Dr. Guo Chunmei, Deputy Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian and Oceania Studies.

CICIR is a longstanding, extensive, and multifunctional research and consultation complex focusing on international development, strategic, and security studies.

It covers all geographic areas and major issues in the world. It opened up to the public in 1980, and it extensively unified several specialized, regional, and issue-focused institutes such as China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations in 2003.

CICIR has a staff of about 300, including researchers, and administrative and logistic personnel, who work for 15 institutes, several centers and several offices such as the Institute of South Asian Studies, Department of International Exchanges, Center for World Information and References, etc.. For years, it has carried out wide-ranging, thorough and high-end international academic exchanges. It was authorized to confer master’s and doctoral degrees. It publishes three academic journals including  Contemporary International Relations and China Security Studies.

In 2015, CICIR was designated as a pilot unit to build up China’s Top Think Tanks. In August 2016 CICIR President Dr. Ji Zhiye led a Nepal-visiting CICIR team that engaged in conversations on development, security and strategic areas of studies.

CICIR has been a counterpart think tank of China Study Center Nepal (CSC Nepal) since 2007. Under a cooperation agreement signed in 2007, both CSC Nepal and CICIR have been making academic exchange visits between the two countries every alternate year (such exchanges were disrupted in the years of COVID-19). Following this established practice, the visiting CICIR and CSC Nepal delegations have been received in high esteem in the respective host country. In Nepal, CICIR teams have made courtesy calls on the prime ministers of Nepal, and have been engaged in friendly and candid conversations with ministers, and senior political party leaders, and distinguished members of the Nepali knowledgeable circle.
