The Supreme Court (SC) has finally paved the way for the government authorities to investigate the two former prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Baburam Bhattarai in the case related to the notorious Lalita Niwas land scam.
The two were leading the government when controversial decisions on the land of Lalita Niwas were made.
Issuing an order on Sunday, the Supreme Court asked the authorities concerned to bring the prime ministers who headed the governments during the transfer of the government land in the name of individuals in the Lalita Niwas case.
Earlier, the government was criticised for not bringing the PMs to book in the case.
A joint bench of SC justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Kumar Chudal issued the order while hearing Yograj Paudel’s habeas corpus plea.
“As the investigation so far focused only on the employees of the assigned level of work and those who purchased land, while leaving out those who made decisions or participated in the decision-making process from the scope of the investigation, it also put the public trust in the entire judicial system at risk,” the SC said in its order.
The SC’s order further mentioned investigating officials to immediately begin an investigation against those who were directly involved in the implementation level to bring the land of Lalita Niwas in the name of individuals on various dates, who submitted a proposal to make that decision at the ministry level or through the appointment of higher level officials or officials involved in the proposal.
Earlier, only Bijya Kumar Gachchhadar who was serving as minister was dragged into the case.
