The main opposition CPN (UML) has been obstructing the meetings of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, demanding the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the smuggling of 100kg of gold from the Tribhuvan International Airport.
It is not known why the UML is demanding the committee when the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has been investigating the case while the government has already made it clear that no high-level committee would be formed on the gold smuggling scam. Many have interpreted the obstruction of the House by the UML as a bargaining tool to get chairmen into more Parliamentary Committees and appointments in the constitutional bodies including to the post of the auditor general. The political parties took five-plus months to form the parliamentary committees but are still unable to name their chairs even eight months after the elections to the House of Representatives concluded.
The UML wants to have more committee chairs by obstructing the House for a long time because UML had earned a bad name for obstructing the House over trivial issues right from 1992.
Although the UML let Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha clarify the questions raised in the House over the gold scam on Tuesday, it obstructed the House immediately after DPM Shrestha concluded his address stating that the UML was not satisfied with the answers.
In his address, DPM Shrestha urged the political parties to trust the police and wait for 35 days for the results. But UML was not ready for that.
Others claim that the UML wants the high-level commission on the gold scam to weaken the investigation and dismiss the case to save many UML leaders and the businessmen close to its chairman KP Oli.
When the UML continues obstructing the House, many important bills have remained pending in the House. Several Bills associated with the people, civil servants, Education and others have to be decided by the current session, but the UML is delaying their passage by obstructing the House. And if the ruling parties agreed to give chairmen of the committees, the UML is sure to lift the obstruction because the UML had lifted many such obstructions even when their demands were not met in the past.
