NC leaders express ire against factionalism, mixed election system

The Nepali Congress held its Central Working Committee meeting of the Nepali Congress in a gap of a year.

Party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had not called the CWC meeting in one pretext or another for a year fearing backlash from the CWC members for his controversial decisions during elections. However, this time he not only called the CWC meeting but also decided to live-stream it.

In the meeting which continued also on Wednesday, the disputes between party president Deuba and general secretary duo Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma became apparent with many of the CWC members either defending Deuba or Thapa or criticising them.

Technically, Deuba enjoys an overwhelming majority in the CWC but lacks public support because of his controversial decisions. Moreover, his popularity has waned because of his spouse Arzu Rana, who the public takes as a corrupt person. Her controversial statements have also eroded the popularity of the party in the masses. But the leaders loyal to Deuba and Arzu undermined this reality while speaking in the CWC meeting, as they spent their time criticising Thapa and defending Deuba.

Besides expressing their anger, the CWC members also aired views against the mixed electoral system, ineffective federal structure as well as the jumbo sizes of the Federal Parliament and Provincial Assemblies. Similarly, they spoke against the controversial Bill that will release jailed culprits giving a political colour to their crimes.

Besides, they asked party president Deuba to run the party as per the party statute, call the policy convention and fill up the party departments.
