NC suspicious with Socialist Front; is NC-UML alliance government possible?

Kathmandu, 22 June: Formation of the Socialist Front comprised of four parties having Left background has created suspect for the Nepali Congress, the largest party in Parliament.

In the meantime, UML leaders have started talks with different levels of the Nepali Congress leaders saying that the coalition government comprised of small parties has created political instability, therefore, NC and UML, the first and second largest parties in Parliament should form a strong and stable government.

NC leaders such as Sekhar Koirala, Gagan Thapa and Gyanendra Bahadur Karki are seen as positive on the UML proposal, however, without president Sher Bahadur Deuba’s consent, it is impossible, they have concluded.

According to reports, Deuba was scheduled to return on 21 June from Singapore, at the last hours, he cancelled the flight and extended his stay in Singapore. It is speculated that Deuba is holding secret meetings with “key” officials of a power center, more likely, the RAW officials in Singapore.

On the other hand, the government is facing strong criticism from within the parties in the ruling alliance on the budget presented by Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat. They have even warned against failing the budget. NC ministers have been disappointed by such an attitude of the alliance partners.

Meanwhile, NC leader Gagan Thapa said that the possibility of the formation of an NC-UML government cannot be undermined. Be that as it may, the remote control of the government in Nepal is in New Delhi and things will develop as per the wish of Delhi, a section of political analysts believe.
