Democracy should be manifest in action: HM

His Majesty King Birendra has stressed that the people’s faith in democracy should be manifest in their actions. That pithy piece of advice was contained in his traditional message to the nation on the occasion of the 45th National Democracy Day, February 19.

In the same brief message the first of its kind after the installation of the UML government the Nepalese monarch also underlined the need for the “exercise of multi-party democracy“ and economic development to go along “hand-in-hand”.

Meaningfully, too King Birendra deemed it “equally essential that all political activities are guided by our tradition of social harmony and cultural tolerance which has constantly nurtured our national unity”.

People’s Review, 23 February 1995.
