Loktantra Day limits on social sites

By Our Reporter

Monday (April 24) was Loktantra Day but no one marked it. Even the government did not organise any formal programme to commemorate the day on Monday for no apparent reason. Instead, people in Tanahun and Chitwan outright rejected the parties, which often boast about ushering in Loktantra, in the by-election.

Loktantra has been only for a small group of people; not for Nepal and Nepali people’s prosperity. It has virtually turned into loot-antra as the people close to powerful leaders and the leaders themselves have utilised the political system to amass wealth. It was evident from the fact that the people did not mark the Loktantra Dya. Only a handful of men were observed posting their 17-year-old photographs showing their participation in the street demonstrations of April 2006.

Seventeen years after the so-called April Uprising that ended the monarchy through a conspiracy of the so-called big parties in Nepal and their foreign masters, people have not been happy with the ways the parties are functioning. The system has been good for only the chiefs of the big parties, their spouses and other family members, their puppet cadres and the corrupt civil servants. They continued to amass property while the people are compelled to live in scarcity.  The country is still among the poorest countries but the leaders are becoming wealthy.

The national sovereignty and integrity have been weakened over the years.  Foreign loans have multiplied, corruption has thrived, cultures and religions have been under attack and social harmony has been disturbed leading to mass frustration.

Thousands of youth fly abroad every day searching for jobs and better life but the governments formed over the years have paid little attention to creating jobs within the country.  The whole economy is sustained by the remittance of the migrant workers, but the political parties, their leaders and ministers keep on giving protection to the corrupt instead of working to improve the living standards of the poor people. These all malpractices of the political sectors have resulted in not observing Loktantra Day this year.
