PM prepares for India visit

By Our Reporter

Visiting India first by any prime minister of Nepal after their appointment has been a tradition. No one dares to breach this tradition, because breaching this tradition could be costly for the PM. It was evident from the fall of the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government in 2009. He was trapped to resign six months after he visited China first in 2008.

Learning a lesson from the incident from his first stint, PM Dahal is now preparing to pay a visit to India. He has already received an invitation and he is probably visiting India this month.

The mission is obviously to please India so that he won’t face any non-cooperation as in 2009. Of course, it won’t be otherwise to say that every Prime Minister of Nepal visits India first as if to present his letter of credence to the Indian establishment.

Although the agenda in every such visit has been to strengthen cooperation and ties between the two neighbours, Nepali PMs often return home after offering something crucial to India. And this time, it is widely suspected that PM Dahal will hand over some key hydropower projects to India in the process of pleasing Delhi.

But he is not likely to raise the issue of Kalapani, the dams built by India along the Nepal-India border and other issues.
