Struggle for existence or attempts for dissolution?

On/Off the Record

By P.R. Pradhan

All the acts of the political leaders in the government are intended to collapse the nation. Clearly, the present federalism will not strengthen sovereignty and independence and doesn’t make this historical nation prosperous. The present ruling alliance has been developed in the greater interests of the foreign powers. Whether it is the prime minister or the president, they are for serving foreign powers’ interests rather than protecting the nation’s interests. The issue of citizenship for Nepal like a tiny country is very sensitive. Unfortunately, the present coalition government has been formed to amend the citizenship law.

Believe it or not, the fact is that the nation started to move towards the wrong direction since the country adopted a multiparty democracy. The Maoist “people’s war” is the byproduct of the perversion of the leaders under the multiparty system. The then prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala sacked many qualified civil servicemen destroying the civil service. Then, he reached out to the Nepal Police, a disciplined organization. To destroy the nation economically, government-run profit-making industries were disposed of in the name of economic liberalization. As result, thousands of Nepali citizens became jobless. Nepal a country exporting agricultural products and substituting many items for imports was then converted into a country totally relying on imports. The nation’s revenue source is solely dependent on the customs duty received from imports. If imports are stopped, the government cannot meet the revenue target and cannot manage its expenditure.

Even in such an adverse situation, farmers are growing agro-products. The government is intended to discourage farmers. Just recently, the government decided to reduce the subsidy amount on fertilizer, which will incline the production cost of the farmers. However, after a protest from all sectors, the government has been compelled to take back the decision for the time being. Every time, during the farming season, there is a shortage of fertilizers. Such a shortage has been created in a planned manner for discouraging farmers. The India-puppet government led by Pushpakamal Dahal Prachanda decided to remove the decision for conducting pesticides test on vegetables imported from India. The government authorities found heavy use of pesticides which is harmful to humankind. The decision not to conduct pesticide tests on the vegetables imported from India was suspended as PM Dahal felt that India could become furious. He is concerned with pleasing India rather than citizens consuming poisonous vegetables. Nepali farmers are not getting the price of their products as Indian agro-products are being imported at very low customs tariffs.

In the process of pleasing their Indian bosses, foreign direct investment has been opened in the agricultural sector. Surely, such foreign investment will end the self-created jobs of hundreds of thousands of Nepali farmers as they cannot compete with the dumped Indian products. In the past, Nepal was self-sufficient in soaps, detergents, toothpaste and toothbrush products. When Indian multinational giants, Daber Nepal and Unilever entered the Nepali market, these factories run by Nepali entrepreneurs have been disappeared.

Our leaders don’t forget to laud “socialism” but their socialism is based on empowering those Indians in Nepal. Already above 95 per cent of businesses and banks are under the grip of Indian businessmen holding dual citizenship – Indian and Nepali as well.

The leaders belonging to different political parties are encouraging Nepali youths to go abroad for dirty work. The Indian plan is to encourage Indian nationals, especially from Bihar and UP for migrating to Nepal. To materialize this plan, Nepali political leaders have been used. Those who are lobbying for an amendment to the citizenship bill are heavily paid by the Indians. Leaders from different political parties are being used for amending the citizenship law granting Indian nationals Nepali citizenship instantly. Meanwhile, they are being used for the smooth implementation of the MCC and endorsement of the SPP. Against Nepal’s standard non-aligned foreign policy, the leaders sided with the Indo-West lobby, which is seriously harmful to Nepal.

The process of destroying the Nepali economy, bringing Nepal into a debt-trap situation, and implementing one after another foreign agenda is finally pushing the nation towards dissolution. As long as the present political system will continue and the present political actors continue to serve the foreign power, the dissolution of Nepal is obvious. To save the nation from the grip of those ill-intentioned people, we must restore the institution of the monarchy with the role of a monitor or a referee checking foul games performed by those political leaders.
